Friday night’s Amanda Blank set at The Scoot Inn was like a good quickie: short, sweet, blood-pumping and satisfying. The Philadelphia native was in Austin for all the ACL weekend madness. Brought in by local promoter Knuckle Rumbler, Blank headlined a show that included God-Es and She, Dubb Sicks and Darko. It was quite the dance party.
From the moment Blank took the stage in her sexy black leotard and torn black stockings, she had people dancing and bobbing their heads. Best of all, it was good to hear that she actually sounds good live. A big turn-off for concerts in this sort of bouncey, indie-electro, Spank Rock genre is the artists don’t sound good live as they do on their records. It’s obvious Blank would be alright on her songs or verses where she raps, but she showed off her killer singing voice. Can you say blue-eyed soul?
Performing her short catalogue of fan favorites such as “Make It Take It” and “Might Like You Better,” she owned the stage and crowd. With just herself and a DJ, her set seemed bigger than what it was. However, her set was way too short for a headliner and to not have an encore is disappointing for all. It’s that same feeling you got in high school when you and your friends finally put together an epic house party only to have to shut down early because the cops came. With more material in the works and a good fan base here in Austin, we can only hope her next show here gives fans more than what they saw Friday night.
Amanda Blank performed at Scoot Inn in Austin on Oct 8.
