Sometimes the best shows are at unorthodox, out-of-the-way places. This is definitely true for punk shows in Austin as UK punks FRAU headline at Tamale House East on Tuesday. It is their only Texas tour stop on their current tour.
The four-band bill at Mohawk on Tuesday, June 16 will most likely have you abandoning all responsibility or rational thought. Headlining the show are local noise-mongers Empty Markets. If you’re into angular noise-pop and spots of sheer white-hot noise, these guys are sure to melt your face off.
Austin-based singer-songwriter Little Brave performing live at The North Door as part of The Good Music Club series.
You can’t tune into a country radio station and hope to hear anything worth getting excited about now. Writer Grady Smith made a hilarious video proving why that is.
Canadian indie darlings Tegan and Sara join Taylor Swift on stage in LA to sing their hit “Closer.” We’re not sure if we are pissed off about this or happy for them. Watch the video and see what you think.
Still don’t know what’s up with this thing called “Free Week” everyone is talking about? Get up from under that rock you live under and watch this video from The Austin American Statesman and listen to what our own Editor in Chief has to say about Free Week.
Laura Burhenn and company have a new limited edition record and a music video for fans of the Omaha-based indie-pop collective. Saddle Creek has pressed 1,000 copies of “Body of Work” to vinyl.
Husband and wife duo, Ashlee and Jimmy formed a band in 2009 with family members Jordan and Cj. Matrimony was signed to Columbia Records as well as featured in the Chevy Malibu commercial that premiered during the World Series with their hit “Obey Your Guns.”
2012 cannot possibly be the end of the world. Not with a new The Hives album coming this summer. That’s right–the Swedish garage rockers will be releasing their fifth studio album, Lex Hives, on June 5, the follow-up to 2007’s The Black and White Album. Known for their classic hit “Hate to Say I Told […]
Austin’s own Megafauna completed a West Coast tour last year and they have the video tape to prove it. Videographer Jake Sam put together this rad music video using footage of the band’s live sets and random b-roll. We’re not sure what it makes us want to do more: rock out or take a trip […]
Promo photo by Elias Tahan. It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from 1990s alternative rock group, Garbage. Known for classics “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy when It Rains,” Garbage has been taking a break since their 2005 release, Bleed Like Me, with members taking time off to pursue other interests. Now, the group is back, […]
The hip hop duo King Fantastic music steps out of the box with their excitingly wild combination of late ’90s Los Angeles hip hop swag with synthesized drum and bass dubstep. Blending the talent of internationally known DJ, Troublemaker, and underground Los Angeles rapper, Killer Reese One, the release of their debut album, Finger Snaps […]
Austin’s The Wooden Birds are a four piece indie band that features former American Analog Set member, Andrew Kenny. For their current tour in support of their new album, Two Matchsticks, the band added guitarist Chris Hansen to add to their already stellar live shows. The Wooden Birds return to play a hometown show at […]
Austin’s Britpop extraordinaires STEREO IS A LIE (SIAL) were one of the four incredible Austin based bands we featured at our Free Week showcase in January. The band is an Austin rarity in terms of offering the best in local Britpop with an actual English frontman, Glynn Wedgewood. When Manchester Orchestra were in town recently, […]
One of the most talked about bands during South by Southwest (SXSW) was Mister Heavenly. Undoubtedly, if you were at South by, you either saw them or know somebody that did. The band is composed of three indie-rock veterans, Nick Thorburn (Islands/The Unicorns), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse). The fascinating thing […]
Our editor-in-chief, the meathead that he is, doesn’t like most indie bands. He prefers heavier stuff. But through some miracle, he loved MoTel Aviv when the post-punk revivalists played our Free Week showcase. Maybe it was their frontman’s swagger and Smiths-esque voice, or perhaps the bass player’s effortless rhythm while keeping the low end thumping, […]
STEREO IS A LIE is one of those rare bands that came out of the gates with a clear identity and polished sound. There was no pussyfooting. The quintet mixes Brit-rock and alternative rock influences with a little Texas twang and a shoegazy wall of sound. Their excellent debut album, STEREO IS A LIE, hit […]
Michael Benjamin Lerner is the face behind the indie-rock-meets-power-pop project Telekinesis. Based in Seattle, Washington, Lerner signed to Merge Records in 2009 where he released his debut album, Telekinesis!, April of that year. Chris Walla of Death Cab For Cutie helped to mix, produce and engineer the album that was recorded in September of 2008. […]
Austin space-rockers The Boxing Lesson brought their honed psychedelic fury to Emo’s during Free Week this year and we got some of it on video. Watch below as the group, co-piloted by Paul Waclawsky and Jaylinn Davidson, plays a new song, “Health is the New Drug.” This killer tune is expected to be on The […]
During this year’s Free Week—the Red River district’s annual free-music free-for-all—we shot videos of a bunch of live performances by local bands. We’ll be rolling out these videos over the next few weeks in the Austin section, along with preview clips on Facebook (the first of which you can watch below). The first video went […]
