Ten years have gone by since Will Smith rapped on an album and 18 have passed since he taught the world how to get “jiggy” with it, but his silence was broken today thanks to Bomba Esteréo’s latest single. “Fiesta (Remix),” mixes traditional champeta with electro-pop, a sound Bomba Esterèo is known for. The Fresh Prince himself throws in an intro shout out and a pretty solid verse.
According to a press release, the unexpected collaboration came after Smith made a visit to Colombia. After hearing the band and liking Simón Mejía and Liliana Saumet’s “electro tropical” sound, a collaboration was born and a video (which was shot in Los Angeles not too long ago) is on the way. The original track, “Fiesta,” comes off of the group’s newest album, Amanecer. Both the single and album are nominated for Latin Grammys this year — for “Record of the Year,” and “Best Alternative Music Album,” respectively.
Aside from possibly setting up a musical comeback for Smith, Bomba Esteréo has toured in over 40 countries and played festivals like Texas favorites ACL, SXSW, and Pachanga. The band will be back in the Lone Star State for two dates in November, first in San Antonio at Paper Tiger, and then in Austin at Fun Fun Fun Fest. No word yet on whether or not Smith will join in on the fiesta.
