Every year, early January is deadsville when it comes to major touring acts coming through town. Students are typically back in their respective cities during winter break, recovering from finals and a long semester of
partying studying. It’s during that time that Austin becomes Austin again and the local scene takes over for what is known as Free Week.
The purveyor of Free Week is Transmission Events chief Graham Williams, who founded Free Week when he was at Emo’s many moons ago. What was started as way to keep patrons coming to the clubs during that first week of January ended up being the best thing to happen to the Austin music scene. It is the one week the locals are given the rock star treatment. There are little-to-no touring acts to compete with, people actually fill the venues for local acts and major Austin media pays attention to what’s happening with bands who live and play here. Imagine that. Think of South by Southwest without all the douche-baggery and wristbands. That’s Free Week.
This year’s lineup from Transmission is strong as always, filled with Austin heavyweights like Riverboat Gamblers to hot up-and-comers Borrisokane and Boyfrndz, to name a few. Be ready to stay up late, drink lots of caffeine and discover why Austin still has the best music scene in the world.
See the full lineup below. Free Week 2013 goes from Jan. 2 through Jan. 12. Participating venues under the Transmission family include Mohawk, Red 7, Beerland and Holy Mountain. Visit the individual venue website for complete show listings and details.
