Perennial dive bar favorite The Lost Well is playing host to three metal bands tonight for a paltry sum of only five bones. Cleric and Crawl, both from Dallas, are kicking off their tour together with a little help from Austin’s own metal titans Sex Chamber.
Cleric’s debut album, Gratum Inferno, is impressive for a variety of reasons, but the cover art might be the most impressive of all. Heinous beyond belief (not a bad thing), the eye-popping art picturing scores of dead bodies and bleeding orifices gives you a good indication of the music in the grooves. Bone-crushing riffs and growling, Deicide-like vocals make for a perfect old-school death metal listen. Cleric may not be re-inventing the wheel, but who needs to when the wheel is perfect as it is?
The nightmare-inducing sounds that come out of Crawl are a different kind of beast. Their band name is no fluke; their tunes are the aural equivalent of being stretched to death on some type of medieval torture device (again, not a bad thing). Feedback drones and ghastly groans are on full display here – not unlike the heavy-hitters in Sunn O))).
The Lost Well is located at 2421 Webberville Rd. Admission is $5. Doors open at 9 p.m. For more information, visit the Facebook event page here or call 512-666-6666 (no joke).
