Ever seen the movie The Exterminator? It’s a great early ’80s slice of exploitation schlock about a Vietnam vet who cleans up the neighborhood by taking out the street punk trash. The main gang are the Ghetto Ghouls, a bunch of slimy creeps who steal beer and mug helpless passerby. They’re a motley bunch, and by the end of the film the Ghetto Ghouls are turned into toast by the Exterminator’s gnarly flamethrower.
Thankfully, Austin’s Ghetto Ghouls are a nicer bunch of upstanding gentlemen. You might not think that while listening to their 2014 self-titled release, however. The songs drip with pissed-off temperaments, listless posing and a general devil-may-care attitude. In short, it’s a perfect punk rock record.
Like Ghetto Ghouls, local band Flesh Lights (named a somewhat notorious product made and manufactured here in Austin) also have their punk rock party sound down pat. Young, loud and snotty, these hoodlums have hot molten leather for blood. Check out their 2014 release Free Yourself for further proof that punk’s not dead.
