Local heroes Warm Soda have been bringing their sticky-sweet power-pop sounds to eager European ears for the last couple of months. Fresh off a two-month tour of Europe and with a brand new album on their hands, Symbolic Dream, the boys are back in town and playing a homecoming show at Hotel Vegas on Friday, June 26, along with Sweet Talk and Vikings.
The Bay Area transplants (don’t hold it against ‘em) moved to Austin in 2014. Lead singer/guitarist Matthew Melton was previously in the rock ‘em sock ‘em Bare Wires, a band that was loosely associated with the late Jay Reatard (he produced their debut album, 2009’s Artificial Clouds) and had somewhat of a public break-up at SXSW in 2012. Not missing a beat, Melton formed Warm Soda, a lo-fi fuzzier extension of his previous band. Warm Soda has three albums under their leather belts – Someone For You (2013, Burger Records), Sweet Reckless Hearts (2014, Lollipop Records) and this year’s release, Symbolic Dream (Burger Records).
Sweet Talk are another local quartet playing fast and loose rock ’n’ roll. Whereas Warm Soda are candied and syrupy like their namesake suggests, Sweet Talk’s beefed-up take on garage rock is a bit dirtier, a tad more street-tough.
