Friday, June 26, the folks from The Good Music Club (GMC) are presenting the vinyl release show for the new Scorpion Child 7’inch at The Belmont. The latest Austin-based group to be featured in the GMC’s catalog of releases, Scorpion Child will headline the eclectic bill that also includes post-punk group KNIFIGHT and indie-pop outfit The Ripe. Austin’s DJ Scorpio will be spinning throughout the night at well.
Formed in 2006, Scorpion Child is Austin’s answer to Led Zeppelin. That comparison is due largely in part to the Plant-like vocal stylings of frontman Aryn Jonathan Black, one of their remaining original members. However, it is not Black alone that draws comparisons to the rock legends, as the stoner rock quintet features an epic two guitar attack with a heavy bassline and a kick-ass drummer. It is no surprise that after years of paying their dues with smaller Red River club shows that their popularity took off locally.
In 2013 Scorpion Child signed with popular metal label Nuclear Blast, home to big names like Slayer and Biohazard. It was that same year the group was able to re-release their self-titled debut album, produced and arranged by Grammy-nominated Chris “Frenchie” Smith. The new found national success of the album was largely due to the success of their biggest single to date, “Polygon Of Eyes.” As this pertains to Friday’s show, it was material from that album that Scorpion Child performed for their Good Music Club taping in 2013 that will be featured on the new gold ‘7 inch.
