Are Tuesday nights a bummer for you? Got the early work-week blues? Bah, get thee to the Mohawk and live a little!
The four-band bill on Tuesday, June 16 will most likely have you abandoning all responsibility or rational thought. Headlining the show are local noise-mongers Empty Markets. If you’re into angular noise-pop and spots of sheer white-hot noise, these guys are sure to melt your face off.
What do you think of when I say Wisconsin? Cows, cheese and Laverne & Shirley? How about copious amounts of beer, bratwurst and Alice Cooper in Wayne’s World? In a perfect world, you’ll think of Tenement, a band from Appleton, Wisconsin that somehow encapsulates all of the above. They’re a snotty pop-punk band who aren’t afraid to wear their Fat Records/Lookout Records influences on their Green Bay Packers sleeves.
What if hardcore legends Bad Brains were from Indiana instead of Washington D.C.? Would they still be banned, or would they sound a lot like Big Zit? The high-pitched yet guttural vocals, the lightning-fast guitar licks, the overall ferociousness – it’s all there. The members of Big Zit have sprung from bands called Pukeoid, Ooze, and Raw Nerve, so I’m happy to see they’ve stuck to their roots when it comes to picking a new band name.
Denton, Texas has a rich musical history – specifically in the last decade or so. Bands and musicians like Neon Indian, Faux Fox, Darktown Strutters, George Quartz and many more have have turned that town into an art-damaged haven. Denton band Video are no exception. Throw in a little bit of raunchy rock ’n’ roll, a dose of psychedelica and a hefty heaving of attitude and you’ll come a little close to these noiseniks.
The Mohawk is located at 912 Red River St. The show kicks off at inside at 9 p.m. All ages are welcome. Tickets are $8. You can join the event on Facebook here.
