When we booked White Dress to play our monthly Red River Noise showcase, we didn’t know it would be their last show as a band. The bluesy rock trio announced the news last week on Facebook. Their explanation: “We must chase the seasons of our inspirations and move on down the line to fresh, future artistic endeavors. Thank you for your love and support. Soon.”
Such a poetic and cryptic message as the final goodbye is fitting for the group, which has traditionally been elusive and mysterious, both in its music and in its presence as an Austin band. Though White Dress has had such high-profile gigs as ACL Fest, opening for Gary Clark, Jr. at Antone’s and a Daytrotter session to its credit, the band doesn’t make the scenester rounds or get hyped on local blogs. The trio is led by noted solo artist Arum Rae Valkonen, whose smoky voice and emotive guitar playing are the centerpiece of White Dress’ haunting yet catchy sound. This is your last chance to see this band play live, so don’t miss that chance. It’s an honor to have such a great talent use our show as its farewell.
Also on the bill are two other great rock acts. Self-described as “three college drop outs makin’ a whole lot of noise,” Black Tabs will bring gritty garage-blues to balance White Dress’ more mellow country-tinged blues style. Composed of Natasha Jean, Josh Nash and Jason Armstrong, the trio has been turning heads with their heavy psychedelic live show, recently performing at Cheer Up Charlie’s Psychedelic Light & Sound Festival. Western Ghost House will kick things off with their well-honed sound that ranges from haunted folk to indie pop-rock. After taking a few months off from performing live, and getting a new guitarist, the band is bringing back their eerie and harrowing rock ‘n’ roll style.
