At the age of four, while watching a performance by cellist Yo Yo Ma, jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding decided that she wanted to pursue a career in music. After one year, she had taught herself how to play the violin. Twenty-one years later she was holding a Grammy in her hands for Best New Artist. The Oregon based singer launched her solo career in 2008 with her album, Esperanza, where she mixes jazz, funk, Brazilian rhythms while singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Spalding’s latest album debuted last year and now she lends her talents to actor Peter Stormare’s compilation, A Tribute to Billie Holiday, available July 5 via StormVox Records. The 14-track compilation honors jazz singer/songwriter Billie Holiday through the voices of Babyface, Rocco DeLuca, Boz Scaggs and Shelby Lynne among other musicians.
