Sub Pop Records of Seatle, WA have entered a recording agreement with the alluring band, Shearwater. Currently, the band is not disclosing much about their upcoming album, but singer Jonathan Meiburg hints that it will be different from previous albums. “We’re having trouble taming this one,” he says, “but luckily, we don’t really want to.”
Shearwater’s crave for change was demonstrated earlier this year when the band put on a 3-hour performance in their hometown of Austin. The concert, named The Island Arc, is a performance Shearwater’s trilogy composed of The Golden Archipelago (2010), Rook (2008), and Palo Santo (2006) and wrapping up an era for the band. Shearwater has made a few recordings from that show available on their bandcamp page.
In addition to vamping up for their next album, due early in 2012, members of the band have also been participating in their own musical endeavors. Drummer Thor Harris has been performing in Michael Gira’s Swans, and will be releasing an instrumental album and a book of drawings soon. Singer Meiburg is playing keyboards on Bill Callahan’s Apocalypse, and is featured as guest vocals to Okkervil River’s upcoming I Am Very Far.
