With the dissolution of several of the major touring festivals this year, the summer cycle was looking pretty bleak. Never having been a huge fan of all day fests in general, it is not a sad day in my opinion, but an opportunity for several cheaper and cooler alternatives. Fans have been slacking on buying tickets for these big fests as prices have skyrocketed and the caliber of talent has slid toward the mediocre.
It took me a while to formulate thoughts about one of the survivors the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. I waivered from dislike to indifference and back several times trying to think of why this actually might be worth commenting on, realizing that there are quite a few fans of the bands playing whether I am or not. Call me a metal elitist, and proud to be ‘that guy.’
The disappearance of bands from the ‘underground’ on early stages frustrates me more than usual this year. Usurped by branded sellers that have been doing the fest circuit for years, replaced with pop metal bands who can sell tons of merch, I get it, asses in seats, and the fact that people have to be there to keep a venture like a festival rolling.
The hard part will be watching the couple really good bands on the bill being ignored while people rabid for bland rock music wait for their favorite single to be played. Will I still go? Of course, Machine Head, In Flames and Red Fang destroy, but regardless will leave early. For complete dates, click here.
