The six guys of Philadelphia-based band, Grandchildren combine their multi-instrumental talents with a hip European vibe into drum-driven electro-pop garnering comparisons of somewhere in the neighborhood of Animal Collective or Ratatat.
Showcasing their debut record, Everlasting, at Emo’s during their opening set for Jenny (Lewis) and Johnny the group played musical chairs swapping between guitars, two drum kits, bass, and vocals. The addition of a cajon, a little slide guitar and horns brought another level of audible texture and change-ups.
Their lyrics were muddled by the sound system, but fans didn’t seem to mind, choosing danceable beats and melodic hooks to lyrical content.
As they made their way once last time around the stage, crawling over the drums and passing off guitars for their finale, “Toss and Turn,” it was clear that the band, led by Aleks Martray has the talent to push forward through the “sounds like” category to find their own voice.
Grandchildren opened up for Jenny and Johnny at Emo’s on Nov, 2, 2010.
