They’ve been through a lot, but Death Is Not A Joyride hasn’t faltered. Their lead singer/synth player left the band last year after a stint in rehab. Then about six months later, their drummer quit. As a quintet, DINAJ had created a large, sometimes busy, haunted circus sound. Their lyrics centered around the concept of a Vaudevillian “Human Zoo.”
As a trio, they’ve gone minimalistic out of necessity, but this has arguably freed the band up to be more expressive and less dependent on a concept. The remaining members (a violist, guitarist and bassist/synth player) are using more electronics to fill the gaps and have dropped the vocals altogether.
They recently recorded new material with drummer/producer Kevin Butler (The Clouds are Ghosts, Refused are Fucking Dead). These new songs venture in a more psychedelic/ambient direction, with lots of emotionality. There are moments in these songs that reminds us of Calm Blue Sea or My Education, with a more electronic feel.
DINAJ has three shows left this year, including a performance at CMJ festival in New York tomorrow, and then they’ll be focusing on writing new music.
