Austin promoters Knuckle Rumbler are bringing Brooklyn emcee and Black Star collaborator Talib Kweli to The Scoot Inn in Austin on Thursday, Oct. 7.What better way to absorb some of the hip hop this weekend’s major music festival is lacking than with Talib on the east side?
That’s why we’re hooking up one lucky fan with tickets to this show. We will conduct a raffle on Facebook. Just click LIKE every time you see a link to this post on our wall. We will pick a winner on Thursday.
For those of you know don’t know, Kweli is an underground rapper who came up in the mid ’90s with Cincinnati-based producer DJ Hi-Tek. Shortly thereafter, Kweli and fellow Brooklyn rapper Mos Def collaborated to make what backpackers and hip hop media deem a hip hop classic, the Black Star album.
Kweli and Mos Def never did another Black Star album afterwards, but both went onto successful solo careers. Kweli has collaborated with heavyweights Mary J. Blige, Jean Grae, Will.I.Am and Kanye West, to name a few. Despite the commercial success, Kweli has been on some hip hop’s hottest mixtapes and hasn’t lost an ounce of street cred.
Despite his full catalog, most will know Kweli from his breakout radio hit, “Get By,” from his 2002 release, Quality. Refresh your memory or get familiar here.
The Scoot Inn is located at 1308 E. 4th St. in Austin. Rap groups Riders Against The Storm, Blacklisted Individuals and Crew 54 open. Popular Austin DJs spinning at the show include DJ Chorizo Funk and DJ Chicken George. This show is 18+. Advance tickets are $17 and $22 the day of the show at the door.
