Every once in a while you hear about a band and wonder why anyone would bother listening, but when Powerglove showed up on my desk and I got some background on the band, I was ready for a real stinker. Nintendo metal, not that style with 8-bit keyboards, but actual covers of Nintendo theme songs started their career, and now they have moved on to attack cartoons and movies.
It seems laughable, until you listen to the new CD Saturday Morning Apocalypse. This band is serious about some extremely flippant material. Was it necessary? Or even desired? Probably not, but Powerglove has won me over with their shear ability to take theme songs from Inspector Gadget, X-Men and The Simpsons and turn them into metal masterpieces.
I can appreciate blending humor with metal, but it can be contrived and stale. When you have guys who are virtuosos playing some incredibly sophisticated music, you cannot resist enjoying it. You laugh at first and then cock your head to the side as they blow your mind with their take on pop culture iconic songs. If you are serious about your metal and have no sense of humor, you will hate this.
