For as open-minded as indie music fans are supposed to be, there sure is a lot of decision-making and trend-setting based on clichés and stereotypes. There’s lots of outright dismissal of certain genres or styles of music. Metal is not cool in Austin, for example, unless enjoyed ironically. Jam bands find a similar fate, pigeonholed as an outlet for hairy hippies to noodle endlessly on their Les Pauls.
But goddammit, if there’s one thing Red River Noise is all about, we’re about NOT falling prey to clichés or group-think. We have an “I’ll try anything once” attitude here. So we’re giving away tickets to see New Monsoon at The Parish in Austin on Thursday, Sept. 9. We’ll give the tickets away this Thursday around lunch time on our Facebook page. To win, all you have to do is be the first person to click “Like” when you see the link to this post on our wall this Thursday (Austin-area fans only).
San Francisco’s New Monsoon mixes acoustic and electronic instruments for their classic-rock-influenced jam band sound, which at times sounds like Led Zeppelin meets The Allman Brothers. They also claim Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis as an influence. Can’t go wrong with that. Though we’re not the biggest jam band fans, we’re giving New Monsoon the benefit of the doubt because The Parish thinks they’re good enough to book for a headlining spot. Free tickets if you win. What do you have to lose?
The Parish is located at 214-C East 6th St. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. This show is all-ages. Advance tickets are available through The Parish’s website for $15 here. Tickets will be $20 at the door on the day of the show.
