On occasion, Red River Noise will lend a promotional hand to a deserving local showcase worth spotlighting. This summer, we worked with promoter and Red River all-star, Adi Anand, to support his Wednesday evening showcases at Mohawk, From The Mind of Adi (FTMOA).
The intent of FTMOA is not only to spotlight Austin indie bands, but also provide an enjoyable Red River experience without dragging the next day at work or school. Unlike most shows in Austin, the weekday FTMOA showcases begin at 6 p.m. and end around 9. This summer the showcases were on Wednesdays. Starting this week, Adi is doing it again on with his First Friday Frolic’s kickoff show on Friday, August 6 at Club DeVille.
This Friday’s line up includes one of Adi’s favorite new bands, Burgess Meredith, who perform at 6. Following Burgess Meredith will be the showcase headliner, The Ovenbirds, performing at 7. The Ovenbirds are spearheaded by Mike Booher, of Booher and the Turkeys as well as a cover band called SWISS (’90s covers like Weezer, Pavement, Oasis). Most significantly, he was in Zykos, a pretty big band in the late ’90s and early 2000s in Austin.
Attendees are recommended getting to arrive early as Austin Daily Press will have some delicious sandwich snacks waiting. The beloved Red River food cart participated in a Food Network contest recently, The Great Food Truck Race, which debuts August 15. You’ll also get to enjoy some wonderfully refreshing beverages courtesy of Waialua Soda Works.
