April 29. Whatever happened to being angry? Why does every sub-genre in the indie world need the word “pop” as a prefix or suffix to be successful? The Euro is plummeting, Arizona is mandating racism, an oil rig catastrophe is destroying the Gulf Coast and pot STILL isn’t legal. Clearly, there’s a lot to be angry about, so why do I have to trudge through steaming piles of nostalgic, happy-go-lucky BS when reading indie blogs? Why do I have to take Cults seriously as a band? I want a band that speaks to the times we live in. I’m angry, and I’m not the only one. Thankfully, there’s Violent Soho, a quartet of quarrelsome Aussies who play brash grunge rock with a vocalist who wails like a chain-smoking cat in heat. Perfect soundtrack to the chaos that surrounds us in 2010.
