We weren’t sure people like Christopher Weingarten existed in the music world. You have your Jon Stewarts and Bill Mahers to artfully and crassly criticize the cable news world, while Joe Rogan often acts as the sacred defender of the comedy world. But who was gonna stick up for authenticity and honesty in music journalism? That’s what RRN strives for, but we’re an infant (just launched a couple weeks). Luckily, a man much higher on the totem pole took it upon himself to shit all over the music blogosphere, including mp3 aggregator Hype Machine.
Weingarten, a freelance contributor to The Village Voice, Decibel, Revolver, Rollingstone.com and more, followed up last year’s 140 Character Conference anti-blog tirade with a more detailed and more scathing speech at this year’s conference, held last week. Expectedly, the folks at HypeM are a little butt-hurt. Regarding the rebuttal: C’mon, you’re not winning over any independent-minded readers by saying that HypeM is the Doritos of music criticism. You’re basically proving Weingarten’s point with that analogy, calling your website a bag of zero substance and zero nutrition. Just empty calories and Day-Glo cheese powder.
We also love what Weingarten had to say about AOL’s Spinner.com SXSW interviews. Glad we’re not the only ones who noticed. Real talk, baby.
