It’s Hannah’s party and she can wear a cap stamped “Birthday Bitch” if she wants to. GIRLS season 3, which airs on HBO Sunday nights at 10/9, has an eccentric energy that is as vibrant as the first season. Everyone is still kind of getting it together, all together.
It’s nice to see that Gaby Hoffmann, the cute, sweet girl from Uncle Buck and Field of Dreams is all grown up playing, Caroline, a mentally unstable sister; the sister to Adam. It’s interesting to see Adam immediately reject his sister’s need for help, especially after he rescued Hannah in Season 2 during her mental OCD breakdown (which she mentions in the episode). And while Caroline’s self-involvement is clearly noticeable, it’s also understandable when Hannah wants to help her.
The episode is not all dim though, far from it actually. Marnie is back, back to her self-absorbing and controlling ways. Besides Hannah’s parents, who else do you think planned her party? It’s no surprise that Marnie showed up looking like a Real Housewife, but when we see Marnie’s amateurish music video made with an array of colore, sepia and black & white shots, we see all kinds of different Marnies. There’s punk rock Marnie. A Disney princess Marnie. And there’s even a Hipster-looking Marnie. All of which was directed by Charlie.
Parties are usually fun, and sometimes wild. In this case, it’s unclear on whether Marnie received Hannah’s approval on her party planning. It’s unclear whether or not Shoshanna and Ray can avoid awkward conversations that exes normally encounter, or whether or not Hannah really just wanted to have birthday sex at the end of the night. There are season 1 and season 2 character favorites, bar fights and impromptu singing. So there’s that.
