Austin’s own blues phenom Gary Clark Jr. announced that he will be releasing a remixtape for fans composed of unreleased music and reworkings from his Blak and Blu debut. To add real hip-hop credibility to the mixtape, he commissioned D-Nice (Boogie Down Productions) to host it and will feature guest appearances from the the likes of Robert Glasper, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott to name a few. The title-track and first single features Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T, which he calls a “country rap tunes meets Texas-tinged, bluesy rock” track.
The release of Blak and Blu: The Mixtape comes off the eve of Clark’s Grammy performance debut and two Grammy nominations for Best Rock Song (“Ain’t Messin Round”) and Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Please Come Home”) — the first time an artist has been nominated in these polar categories in the same year. Clark will join the Kings of Leon on tour starting in Feb. for 17 dates that run through the first week of March. Unfortunately for fans in his hometown, no Austin date is scheduled. Perhaps Austinites (and a million tourists) will see Clark during South By Southwest.
