Maybe it’s just that I’ve been on the other side of 25 for a bit now, but I gotta tell ya, these days I’m bumpin’ those drop-obsessed clubby tracks a lot less often than I used’ta. Now, there is and probably always will be a place for anthemic out-all-night bangers, but a bit of complex melody and subtly crafted mood is my damn jam right now. With that being said, I am lovin’ what I hear in the new TOKiMONSTA remix of Felix Cartal and too-cute singer Ofelia’s track “New Scene,” out Dec. 3 on Dim Mak. Crafty producer that she is, the MONSTA takes Cartal’s track and pares it down, leaving behind the (admittedly still chilled out) house and electro moments in favor of sounds more favorable to kickin’ it with a bowl in a dark room than a night at a rave.
It’s one real nice track (or, as one Soundcloud commenter puts it, “GURL THIS IS FUKKIN FLY”), but that’s not all too shocking considering TOKiMONSTA’s quite stellar record of interesting electronic productions that are unmistakably her own. With but four short years of official releases, TOKiMONSTA’s reputation has shot off like a damned rocketship, earning her nods like LA Weekly’s #1 LA DJ (2010) and even a spot as the first producer with lady parts in BRAINFEEDER, FlyLo’s genre-leading LA crew.
To put it simply, she ain’t your average producer, but if we’re being honest here, most heads have probably been up on TOKi for a while now. However, regardless of whether this track is your intro to an artist that alternately bucks trends and then perfectly flips them for her own uses, or whether it’s just another track in your long list of TOKiMONSTA go-to’s, “New Scene” is worth a minute or two of ear-time without any question. Check it below, ya filthy animals.
