Those who were out of elementary school by 1998 (actually kinda curious to know how many of you there are) might remember a sexy-smooth lil’ slow jam called “Make it Hot” by giant-hat wearing soul singer Nicole Wray. That track went to number 5 in ’98, but if ya don’t know Ms. Wray, well ya might just be about to, because she’s back with a new album under the name Lady (a duo with singer Terri Walker) and just dropped the Good Lovin Remix EP on Oct. 18 through Truth & Soul Records. The EP features the free-to-download “Good Lovin’ (HyGrade Remix) you see below, a pure fire, Chi-town-style house track with all the soul you’d expect from Wray, a former Missy Elliott protege and one of those vocalists that makes most pop musicians look like tequila-wasted karaoke singers.
This return to putting out music under her own moniker is one we welcome from Wray, as the woman has been quietly putting together a career of guest vocaling on major tracks for the past fifteen years (working with Elliott, Cam’ron, The Black Keys and Kid Cudi among others),but Lady is Wray’s first full album since her debut in ’98.
Lady’s focus on soulful, funked-up oldschool production makes their collection of tracks an absolute goldmine for EDM producers, so give this first drop a nice listen below and expect to hear more Lady vocals pepperin’ some sould into your dance floor grooves in the months to come. This that kinda shit to make your one friend who says modern music is all radio drivel look like a damn fool, so don’t sleep on it y’all.
