H∆SHTAG$ is a mini-documentary series that discusses the fascinating music that materializes from the digital realm that is the Internet. This series put together by the Red Bull Music Academy investigates ways in which millennials—who essentially grew up with the Internet—are using it to create new varieties and styles of traditional music.
YouTube, Soundcloud and other social media platforms have become resources for musicians as they consume, discuss, and now create new music forms. This series provides snapshots of the various musical spheres that fuel the Internet. With commentary from leading bloggers and music journalists, the H∆SHTAG$ series examines how music in the age of the Internet is neither constant or delivered in one piece—but rather continuously reevaluated due to the constant evolution of Internet-based music creation and those creating it.
In Episode 3 of H∆SHTAG$ the musical aspect of #cloudrap—a term coined by hip hop eccentric Lil’ B sometime around 2009—is explored. This episode focuses on the “808 drums and Enya-loving, Internet-born micro-culture referred to as Cloud Rap” and features artists like Robb Banks and London’s Piff Gang.
