Sophia Bastian is a name that is unfamiliar to most; but not for long. Bastian is a New York soul singer that began her performing arts career as a teen, dancing ballet in Munich, Germany. She moved to New York at 18 and attended City College where she was a jazz vocal major. Bastian released a self-titled EP in 2010 that has received nothing but positive feedback. While Bastian has been dubbed a soul singer, she incorporates both reggae and blues into her music.
Bastian has released a new video for her single “Breaking,” a track from her self-titled EP. “Breaking” is the type of track that doesn’t need a special effects kind of video to make it stand out. Her voice immediately makes you feel the raw emotion she experienced while writing this song. The red toned setting in the music video pairs almost perfectly with Bastian’s silky, seducing voice. Los Angeles director Ian Skalski collaborated with Bastian to create this video. Skalski has worked with artists like Deadmau5 and Mick Jagger in the past. Bastian’s video has caught some exposure in mainstream media when it was recently picked up by MTV’s program The Freshman. Adele better not be serious about that five-year hiatus from music because Bastian looks like she could be competition in 2013.
