Oh, Fatboy Slim. I think that silly Brit might be the first person I actually recognized as a “DJ,” even though I had very little idea of what that meant in the ’90s, a time when I was but a wee lad from Oklahoma that really liked that “funk soul brother” song and didn’t know why. And now look at me, all addicted to beats and writing about them for a living. You did this to me, you goofy bastard. Damn you, Slim!
One of the true godfathers of electronic music and a huge reason for my personal and sometimes ridiculous obsession with the sound, Fatboy Slim is about to drop a CD/DVD combo called Big Beach Bootique 5 on Feb. 19, through The End Records that gives fans a taste of his now-infamous throwdowns at England’s Brighton Beach. That, weirdly, is a day before this writer’s birthday (Damn you Sliiiiiiiim!). This idea is pretty damn sick, as it lets you not only have an ultra-high-quality look at one of the world’s top performers at his best, you also get the whole fuckin’ set on CD so you can be right there with the ravers. Well, sort-of. You’ll have to bring your own Vick’s and pills and fuzzy boots, but the sound is all there.
These DVDs are already pretty blastin’ successful, something that the entire country of Brazil proved when one of them got so successful in that nation that Slim is now basically a resident there, he plays so many shows. That includes 360k people jammin’ on a beach in Rio and FIVE MILLION at Carnival in Bahia. And if that shit don’t impress your ass, Fatboy played 70 shows last year, one of which was on the Great Wall of China. As he says, “We’d had our gear impounded at customs, we were fully prepared for the idea that it might not happen. And 5000 people turned up. Projecting lasers onto the Great Wall Of China! I don’t know how we got away with it.”
We’ve got us a nice little promo vid for the new DVD down below, and you can pre-order this bizness in three different, sequentially more bitchin’ collections at the Fatboy Slim site here. Every purchase gets a free download of probably the most famous such Beach party, the second one, so you basically be getting’ two awesome films and a CD for the price of one. Snatch it up, you ’90s kids and lovers of the beat!
