On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the ND invites moviegoers to their weekly Free Film Tuesdays event. This week classic ’90s style lowriders, pompadours and Chicano gangsters working the streets of their barrios are in store for you.
Free and Queer Cinema presents Mi Vida Loca, along with contests, prizes and props. A compilation of different, classic and personal favorite movies are selected by Beth Schindler, the curator of Free and Queer.
This week, she is accompanied by a special host, Claudia Zapata, who has put together the screening of Mi Vida Loca. Zapata is a member of Puro Chingon Art Collective and the cofounder of ChingoZine, a Latino art zine. Free and Queer is having many goodies in store, including free Shiner Bock for the first 20 moviegoers, free signed ChingoZines for the first 10 people and a mixture of Chicano music.
Everyone will receive a Chicano vocabulary list, props and other surprises. Be sure to stick around till the end for the trivia contest, which includes ChingoZine tees, buttons and stickers as prizes. In addition to the film and games, music ranging from Chicano classics, cumbias, ballads, norteño and psychedelic funk will be played after the trivia contest.
Director Allison Anders captures the LA streets of Echo Park (Echo Parque) where Latinos run the streets. Mi Vida Loca chronicles the lives of several Chicanas that define the hardships of being a ruca and mother while at the same time being respected. The stories are told in different vignettes where love, drugs and death seem to fill the streets of Echo Park.
The ND is located at 501 Brushy St., next to the IH-35 frontage road. The building is located on the corner of the road. Doors open at 7 p.m and the film starts at 8 p.m. Don’t forget to arrive early for free Shiner Bock and free signed ChingoZines.
