If there’s one type of person that you can pretty much guarantee is going to know a ton of badass old songs, the owner of an equally badass local store has got to be that person. Following that logic, then, a weekly dance party focusing on the best of Motown and DJ’ed by two guys from one of Austin’s most well-respected and stocked record stores as well as the winner of the recent Lords of Wax best of Austin DJ competition is a damn grand slam when it comes to nights out. What we’re talkin’ ’bout here is The New Day Sophisticated Soul Party’s newest residency, a weekly spot at local hotdoggery Frank called “Motown on Mondays,” which is sure to scratch your itch from that seminal soulful sound from Detroit and then some.
This party is actually the Austin iteration of an event that got its start in the mythical land of San Francisco (this writer has never been there and so can not confirm that it actually exists) by a guy named DJ Gordo Cabeza, which is probably the best DJ name of all time. Gordo’s vision has since spread out like a soulful virus to Honolulu, NYC, LA and Detroit, not to mention our wondrous and totally real city. Lucky for us that ain’t living in a possibly imaginary place, the SF DJ is coming to the inaugural Motown on Mondays Austin show and is bringing fellow Fransciscan Timoteo Gigante along with him to drop the groove on us all hard-like.
Gordo and Timeo will join Austin’s coolhands, BSears and the talented DJ Chorizo Funk of Lords of Wax championship fame on the decks for this completely free show at Frank on the evening of December 3. This is an all-ages shindig where you can jam to some of the best pop music ever recorded, selected for you by dudes who seriously know their shit, and you can shove artisan sausages and fermented liquids down your throat while you do it! And then you can do it again the next Monday! Whoa son. Get on that.
