One of the more memorable music videos to come out of Austin in the past few years is 2008’s “Dark Side of the Moog”, a spooky yet fun cut-paper animation that depicts psych-rock trio The Boxing Lesson as animated characters fleeing from monsters on an alien planet.
Four years later, The Boxing Lesson has reunited with local filmmaker Eric Power for another animated romp. This time, the menacing cut-out creatures have come to Austin in this mix of animation and live action. Familiar east side watering holes Shangri-La and Cheer Up Charlies make cameos, as does the Capitol building.
The video is for the new song “Better Daze”, the b-side from the band’s “Health is the New Drug” single. The song is a preview of The Boxing Lesson’s upcoming full-length album, Big Hits, expected out in 2013. This song expands on the spacey alt-rock the band is known for, with renewed focus on tight songcraft and rockstar swagger. Frontman Paul Waclawsky can still shred through launch-into-orbit guitar solos, while howling lines like, “I’ve been waiting and saving for a better daze.” Meanwhile, keyboardist Jaylinn Davidson’s array of synths and samples creates the right amount of down-to-earth groove and cosmic ambiance.
