The ND invites moviegoers to take a break from the Monday blues with their Free Film Tuesdays event. This week classic comedy, the vixen Marilyn Monroe and guys dolled up and dressed in drag entertain your Tuesday night with a couple of drinks and company.
Free and Queer cinema presents the film too hot to handle in the late 1950s, Some Like It Hot. Hosted by Beth Schindler with special guest Rebecca Havemeyer. The Monroe look-alike Rebecca currently holds the title “Best Drag Queen” by Austin Chronicle for the third year in a row. Free Shiner Bock will be handed out for the first 20 people attending, courtesy of Bird’s Barbershop. That’s not all the goodies though, free I Luv Video movie coupons will be given at the ND. Plenty of free to go around after the Thanksgiving holidays.
Director Billy Wilder fabulously revolutionized comedy by pushing the limits with raunchy, audacious and unconventional humor in an era immensely traditional. Staring the mesmerizing Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, Some Like It Hot won an Oscar for Best Costume Design. The movie, shot in black and white, is recognized for it’s ahead-of-its-time tale.
How did Wilder revolutionize a film too advanced for its time? He dolled up dudes. When two musicians, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) witness a gangster shooting they have no choice but to flee with an all-girl jazz band headed towards Florida. In order for them to join the band with Sweet Sue’s Society Syncopators they must disguise themselves and blend in with the rest of the women.
With a new head of hair, alluring lips, and hem-lines Joe turns into Josephine and Jerry turns into Daphne. An unexpected romance springs when Josephine a.k.a Joe falls in love with lead-singer Sugar (Marilyn Monroe).A series of events complicates the boys predicament against the mob when Joe portrays himself as a yacht owning millionaire and Jerry surprisingly has a old wealthy man after his “lady” goodies.
The ND is located at 501 Brushy St., next to the IH-35 frontage road. The building is located on the corner of the road. Doors open at 7 p.m and the film starts at 8:00 p.m. Don’t forget to arrive early for free Shiner Bock and I Love Video coupons. Checkout the event on ND’s website and see the trailer below.
