Hot on the heels of his heavy hitting single “Big Spender” (which he did with fellow up-and-comer A$AP Rocky), Theolophilus London is back with one of his ultra-slick mixtapes! We love a good damn mix-tape, and a quick listen to the brand-spankin’, guest-star littered Rose Island Vol. 1 has not left us disappointed one bit.
London is from Brooklyn by way of Trinidad, and he’s been throwing out much-played mixtapes since 2008’s Jam!, which he recorded at the tender age of 21. Two more mixtapes and a whole lot of touring over the next few years built up some major buzz for the talented spitter, culminating in getting picked up Warner Bros. Records for his star-studded debut EP Lovers Holiday. 2011 saw London’s first album, called Times Are Weird These Days, from which the single “Last Name London” has been a constant on hop-head playlists across the country (529,555 views on Youtube as of this post!).
Rose Island Vol. 1 is London’s fourth mixtape, and it’s a beast. The 18-track tape is all over the place in sound and showcases TL letting his creative imp go wild and experiment with all sorts of sounds. The man says that Rose Island is a place he goes in his head when he needs to escape reality and time, and it feels just like that with a hazy kind of fantasy-world vibe behind each track. Rose Island Vol. 1 is a true TL production, in that it features tracks from all genres (even a “Wang Chung” cover) and a bevy of influential guests, including A$AP Rocky, SADE, Mark Ronson and even Marvin fuckin’ Gaye. London’s also using the tape to showcase his entrepreneurial spirit by marketing a line of high-end slippers by Del Toro called “Rose Island Slippers,” which he wrote an anthem for (on the tape) and says he wore through the whole production. TL has made Rose Island Vol. 1 free to stream and download, so check this shit out now and be the most up-to-date hop head in your crew!
