Seattle’s Unnatural Helpers are back. Since the band’s last collection Cracked Love and Other Drugs in 2010, Unnatural Helpers have been working on new minute-long tracks of the raw sound that has come to define Seattle rock.
The new LP Land Grab (Hardly Art) will feature songs not only written by founding member Dean Whitmore (drums and vocals) but also by the rest of the band members, including Andrew Sullivan (bass), Johnnie Heinz (guitar) and Andrew Greager (guitar). Judging from their release “Hate Your Teachers” from the upcoming LP, the garage rock/punk sound hasn’t changed much from previous tracks like “She Was Your Girlfriend” and “Sunshine/Pretty Girls.” Not that I’m complaining. Compared to the likes of Mudhoney and the Ramones, Unnatural Helpers’ appeal stems from an untouched sound that brings to mind the smell of sweat and beer. Here’s to that.
Land Grab was recorded and mixed by the Fastbacks’ Kurt Bloch and Eric Randall and will be released Sept. 25, 2012. ‘Til then, “Hate Your Teachers.”
