It’s always good to see a local boy make good, especially in a city more known for its indie and country exports than electronic music. That’s why we’re just tickled-damn-pink to see ATX native and dubstep innovator Metranohm dropped a new EP on Gravitas Recordings (also out of the 512) called The Honey Badger EP. Metranohm, real name Andrew Winkler, is a rising Texan star whose style of production breathes fresh life into an already staling genre of electronic music. His ability to build interesting melodies with unexpected sounds and samples has gotten him big shows on the world-wide EDM festival circuit, and even resulted in some pretty damn cool collaborations with folk like Eskmo, Nadis Warriors and Alex Grey, to name a few.
The Honey Badger EP dropped this summer, and from both the title and tracks with names like “Jawa,” it’s clear that Metranohm is fully embracing today’s Internet-focused, nerdy-cool vibe with this release. Even better than that, the man says that while this EP sticks to his dubstep roots at its core, it pulls in influences from a huge variety of electronic genres and styles, including DnB, breaks and techno. We love it when a producer mixes it up and gives nods to other styles, and after a quick listen to a couple of the tracks, we can definitely confirm that this ain’t your typical dubstep release. Listen to the music player below for a preview of this fun and dynamic EP, including a remix of the 1990 Jane’s Addiction track “Been Caught Stealing.” Free music, ATX representin’, and it’s good too? Aw yeah, ya’ll.
