The El Paso, TX quintet Zechs Marquise is not your average family affair. Featuring Rikardo, Marcel and Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez (yes, there are more), Zechs Marquise have solidified themselves as foot-soldiers fighting for psychedelic, hip-hop influenced prog-rock. From Marcel’s J. Dilla-inspired drum beats, to the Santana-esque guitar passages of Matthew Wilkson and Marcos Smith, the group has come a long way from their 2009 debut, Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare, and as the name of their latest album states, they are finally getting paid.
Getting Paid, the group’s sophomore album, shows the band taking a hold of their musical destiny. Featuring guest appearances from vocalist/guitarist Matthew Embree and El Paso singer Sonny Baker, Getting Paid embodies the hip-hop attitude that Zechs Marquise embraces so much. “We liked that hip-hop attitude,” explains Marcel of the album title. “Getting your piece; taking yours.” The group is definitely getting their piece; besides supporting Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group and RX Bandits this past year, the band recently released a video to standout track “Everlasting Beacon of Light.”
Directed by The 90s, “Everlasting Beacon of Light” features surprise cameos from Le Butcherettes’ Teri Gender Bender and RX Bandits’ Matthew Embree, a chopped and screwed interlude courtesy of a few rough-edged gangsters, and animal-men in tailored suits. Strange? Yes. Awesome? Absolutely.
