Comedienne Fortune Feimster is everything you expect her to be. She is friendly, self-assured, cheery and—of course—hilarious.
While attending college, the North Carolina native was mostly interested in acting. Then she realized she wanted to do more comedy, so she started doing more improv to work on her comedic chops.
“When I was doing improv, people would say to me, ‘You’re really funny; you should be doing stand-up,’” says Feimster. “After that, I started doing more open mics, and that’s where my passion for standup began.”
Feimster went on to become a semi-finalist on the seventh season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, which definitely helped put her talent in the public eye. Soon after, the E! late night show Chelsea Lately was looking for new writers and Feimster applied for the position. She met with executives—including Chelsea Handler—and everyone agreed that she was a perfect fit for the show.
“Chelsea is a very generous person and she is a great boss,” says Feimster. “I love that she makes me wear all these ridiculous costumes.”
The backstage shenanigans, however, aren’t as crazy as the public may think. Feimster is quite the professional—with some playfulness, pranks and jokes added to the mix.
“There are some inside jokes that happen in the office, mostly emails and stuff like that,” says Feimster. “We’ll laugh until it hurts sometimes, but we always make sure to get our pre-show work done too.”
“I want to work more on acting in front of the camera,” says Feimster. “And I also want to keep focusing on writing for television especially now with pilot season in full swing.”
As seen in her comedic performances, Feimster is fearless. She is also very easygoing and conversational with the audience. She will say and do anything that will do two things: make her audience relate and make them laugh.
“All my family is pretty funny so it’s easy to come up with material that anyone with family like that can relate to,” says Feimster. “I think that as a Southerner, we are just natural storytellers so standup comedy for us comes easy.”
Before this year’s Moontower Comedy Festival, it had been six years since Fortune Feimster had been in Austin and this was her first time performing in our city. With a great turnout at her shows, Feimster had this to say about the great state of Texas: “Some of the best shows I’ve had were here in Texas, so I’m very glad that my first time performing in Austin has been very welcoming; the crowds have been great.”
Austin enjoyed Fortune’s visit, too. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another six years for a return visit.
