June Divided robbed a bank in order to make their dreams come true. Well, not in real life, but in their recently released music video for their song, “Secrets,” they sure did.
Since their start back in 2010, June Divided has been feature on MTVu, The CW Network, and the Alternative Press magazine. This year marks the third year that they have been to South by Southwest. Last summer marked their release of their latest album, Backbone, and their music video was released right before South By began.
“If you’re desperate enough to do what you love you’ll do almost anything,” June Divided’s drummer Keith Gill said. “Although we actually wouldn’t rob a bank. It’s more of like a metaphor.”
The music video also targets the hardships of the music industry. To make money is to make it big which is a very difficult task in itself, and in order to continue the band had to take matters into their own hands.
“The concepts of the video go behind the concepts of the whole album of Backbone,” June Divided’s lead singer Melissa Menago said. “It’s not really a concept album and about one thing or another, but we did make a lot of statements about the music industry in that album and secrets is kind of another statement in itself.”
The music video made a big statement itself. When their music video was released, it premiered on MTV Buzzworthy.
“We’re really lucky. This industry takes a really long time and some of our friends and bands are asking ‘how are you doing this in such a really short time,’” Menago said. “Sometimes it feels like things are taking forever, but we’ve only been doing this for a few years so it really hasn’t taken forever.”
An interesting fact about the band is, since originally they started off with lead singer Melissa Menago, Chris Kissel on guitar, and Lenny Sasso on bass and were missing the drums, they decided to put an ad on craigslist to see if they could score a drummer—which is a very common practice nowadays.
“I was on the other side where I had played on a few bands in high school and played by myself for the longest time and I just got tired of it,” Gill said. “So I was just on craigslist looking every day.”
And sure enough, they found someone to suit their needs.
“We didn’t expect to find anyone and we finally got a response from Keith and it was like oh this guy seems legit,” Menago said.
