Tonight there will be lots of great live concert choices (as always) in Austin, especially with the big festival happening. That being said, there are a handful of non-festival related concerts worth seeing downtown. Popular 6th Street live music venue Flamingo Cantina is hosting what Chicanos refer to as a “puro pinche party” like no other featuring popular Houston-based Latin ska band, Los Skarnales.
Lead by the pachuco-inspired frontman Felipe Galván, the group formed waaayyyy back in 1994 and have garnered a multicultural fan base from all walks of life on both sides of the border. Often compared to popular groups like Mexico’s Maldita Vecindad or Voodoo Glow Skulls, their brand of ska fuses traditional Latin rhythms, punk rock, reggae, mambo and swing with bilingual lyrics. The self-dubbed vatos rudos are performing in support of their latest EP, Another Day, Another Borrachera.
Los Skarnales share the bill with Austin-based ska band, The Inverters. Lead by veteran Austin-based musician, Al Shire, The Inverters are a relatively new band (formed in 2012). A good musical fit with Los Skarnales, their mix of ska, punk and reggae should have attendees more than warmed up for their Houston homies.
One of the newest reggae bands to come out of Austin with one of the best names I’ve ever heard, Cheebah McIntyre, open the show.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. Cover is $10 at the door. Visit the Facebook event page here.
