Austin-based global groovers, Atash, begin their new Tuesday night residency at Flamingo Cantina tonight. The multiple Austin Music Award winner for “Best World Music Band” will be performing every Tuesday night in both September and October at the popular 6th street venue. This is good news for those who remember the old World Music Nights at Momo’s (RIP) or even the many nights Atash used to play at the old Red Fez (RIP). They will be joined by DJ Sunray who will be spinning the best in global goodness after Atash finishes their set.
Atash’ history is a long and layered one, but it formed from frontman Mohammad Firoozi’s band “The Gypsies” in Austin in 1996, which eventually evolved into Atash. Firoozi, who sings in his native Farsi, is backed by multicultural collective of musicians who bring their own background into their songwriting and composing that creates a unique fusion of global sounds that you can dance or nod your head to. They will be performing in support of their latest album, 2014’s Music Is Everything. Read more about Atash here.
Long story short: If you like bands like Hardproof, or jam out on Africa Night at The Sahara Lounge on Saturdays, then Atash just gave you a reason to go into work tired on Wednesday morning.
Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
