It’s a metal extravaganza over at Holy Mountain on Saturday, Aug. 22. Austin’s Destroyer of Light and Tucson, Arizona’s Godhunter recently released a split LP, and they’ve been touring together since late July. This Saturday is their final night of the tour, and they’ll be joined by local bands Mala Suerte and Ass.
Destroyer of Light formed in 2012. Featuring Steve Colca on guitar and vocals, Jeff Klein on bass, Keegan Kjeldsen on guitar and Penny Turner on drums, Destroyer of Light have the doom-and-gloom on severe lock-down. Colca’s vocals smoothly alternate between a spooky drawl and a demonic growl, while Kjeldsen lays down some tightly-packed riffage. There’s no cookie-cutter sludge-band pitfalls here, Destroyer of Light have their own original thing going strong.
I may have a little bias towards Godhunter’s excellence – these guys hail from my hometown. Kicking ass since 2009, Godhunter’s take on doom metal is akin to being hit over the head repeatedly with a burlap sack of molasses – we’re talking serious dense and mighty riffs here. Jake Brazelton and David Rodgers, both on guitar and vocals, share a unique balance of pure aggression and just-about-to-burst tension. Infamously loud on stage, these guys are a ferocious powerhouse of metal, blood and sweat.
Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. For more information, visit the Holy Mountain website.
