Friday, June 5, is a big day in Austin for fans of Stones Throw records. The folks from Table Manners Crew and Art Seen Alliance are presenting a live concert with the label’s founder, Peanut Butter Wolf, at Holy Mountain. The producer and DJ will showcase (show off) his skills with local support from openers BoomBaptist and Table Manners Crew.
Peanut Butter Wolf, whose real name is Chris Manak, got his start in the early 90’s in San Jose as the DJ/producer for friend and rapper Charizma before he passed away in 1993. After a well understood hiatus, he founded Stones Throw in 1996. The focus of the label for Manak was to put out his own music but also music from other rap artist that he liked, versus what he or others think would sell. Big names on the label’s roster include Madlib and the legendary J Dilla. Current faves include DāM-FunK, Aloe Blacc and J Rocc just to name a few. For Manak’s take on the label’s founding, read the history from the official Stones Throw website here.
In 2001 the NorCal native relocated to Los Angeles and was named “LA’s best DJ” by LA Weekly writer Randall Roberts in 2008. His DJ sets include audio-visual sets, playing excerpts from music videos pulled from his personal collection. Over the years he’s released multiple EPs, mixtapes and singles while also appearing on several compilation albums. In other words, attendees Friday night won’t be disappointed.
Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. Advance tickets for this event are available for purchase online here. Concert presented by Art Seen Alliance and Table Manners Crew. Visit the Facebook event page here.
