Thursday, May 28, May’s installment of the Red Bull Sound Select Austin concert series returns to the The Parish for a second month in a row for a big concert with Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Kali Uchis. Curated by ScoreMore Shows, the event will also feature performances from Denver synth-pop quartet Rose Quartz and Austin alt-R&B artist Mélat. Thursday’s concert will be a great chance for Uchis fans (or curious bystanders) to see her live in in an intimate club show before returning to Austin this fall for weekend two of ACL Fest.
Born in Colombia and raised in Virgina, the 21-year-old released her first EP Por Vida in February. Her signature “made for Instagram” look-bleached blonde hair, gold jewelry and big sunglasses- may be difficult to look past for some potential fans, but her talent for blending bilingual lyrics with ’00s R&B, electronica and doo-wop was evident early on in her career with her self-produced mixtape, Drunken Babble (2012). Uchis has already worked with big name stars including Diplo, Snoop Dogg and Tyler, The Creator to name a few.
Also, let’s not forget her cover of Tejano Music legend Selena’s “Si Una Vez” during South by Southwest that she did at at the Tumblr Fuck Yeah Party that got some media buzz. Let’s hope to hear that again Thursday night. I’d be disappointed if it doesn’t happen. It will be interesting to see how actual Texans who live here would react to Uchis covering our reyna Selena.
