Friday, Apr. 17, Holy Mountain is the place to be if you like your tunes with a whole lotta brass. New Orleans-based heist-funk collective Naughty Professor co-headlines with local Afrobeat fusionists Hardproof. This is an excellent and rare opportunity to see the two together in one small club show.
Formed in 2011, Naughty Professor comes to town as a multiple New Orleans Gambit Big Easy Award nominee, an award much like our own Austin Music Award. Their music without question embodies the acid jazz-influenced culture of their city, but the instrumental sextet is indeed a funk band. Get familiar with the band’s recordings here and be on the lookout for fresh recorded material currently in the works.
Hardproof, the local co-headliner, is a noteable side-project of some members from Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears. Their music takes heavy horns and blends them with funky polyrhythms, tropical and mystical undertones. You can listen to their recordings on bandcamp here, or better yet check out the live clip below.
Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. $10 cover at the door on the day of the show. Advance tickets for $7 are available online here.
