Saturday night is a big night for hip-hop nerds at Mohawk. Aside from having Rhymesayers fave Aesop Rock headlining the outdoor stage, the party continues inside with one of the dopest local hip-hop bills Austin has to offer serving as the official aftershow.
The event opener and host is Space Camp Deathsquad. Composed of members Doc Brown, p-TeK and Secret Levels, the group’s music is old school with a silly lyrical twist. Member p-teK should be a familiar face to local hip-hop fans not only as a solo artist but also as a co-founder of the Austin Mic Exchange.
Waco’s most swagged out and soulful rap group Crew54 will fill the middle slot for the event. Formed in 2006, the duo is composed of rappers Master of Self and G-Christ. The group released their debut album Beaters & Babies that same year and they’ve been a welcomed regular in Austin ever since, opening for many popular touring acts.
Austin-based rhyme-smith Chief and The Doomsday Device closes the night out. The triple threat (rapper, DJ and one time broadcast journalist at KTSW 89.9) makes conscious music in line with the early ’90s Native Tongues movement. He’ll be performing in support of his latest release, Manifest Station.
Multi-tracker DJ Set at midnight and in-between sets.
Mohawk is located at 912 Red River. Doors open at 11:45 p.m. Show will be on the indoor stage after Aesop Rock concert ends outside. All ages welcome. Free admission for Aesop Rock attendees. $5 for 21+. $7 cover for minors. Visit the Facebook event page here.
