Friday, Feb. 27, local PR and management company The Loyalty Firm curated a lineup composed of some of Austin’s best purveyors of experimental indie on one bill at Red 7. Performers The Clouds Are Ghosts and classical post-rock band My Education are local headliners in their own right, but given their complimentary styles, it is good to see them share the spotlight.
Clouds Are Ghosts formed in 2008 and grew from a two piece bedroom project to a sextet that draws comparisons to bands like Foals and even Death Cab For Cutie. Their new age fusion of piano driven pop with layered, atmospheric ambiance backs the melodramatic, even haunting lyrics sung by frontman Jason Morris. While that sounds more like an odd combination than anything, rest assured their music is as cohesive as the music of the bands they often get compared to.
My Education are the quintessential classical post-rock band, that is if any other bands in the classical post-rock genre even exist. Perhaps if Balmorhea and Explosions In The Sky formed a super group, then that group could be considered classical post-rock. Since My Education formed in 1999, the instrumental band’s membership has expanded and contracted while they continued to advance sonically with each release. Their latest, the remaster and vinyl release of 5 Popes on Beat Imprint Records, is in my personal collection.
Red 7 is located at 611 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. Show will be on inside stage. $6 cover for 21+. $8 cover for minors. Visit the Facebook event page here.
