February’s installment of the Red Bull Sound Select Austin concert series happens on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Holy Mountain. Curated by the folks at Scoremore, the all hip-hop lineup is headlined by Chicago-based up-and-comer Mick Jenkins. The show’s openers include Dallas’ Brain Gang collective founder Blue, The Misfit, Southern hip-hop artist Mike Floss and Houston’s alt hip-hop artist Whyjae. It is a damn good sampling of the new generation of hip-hop artists worth checking out.
Signed to Cinematic Music Group, headliner Mick Jenkins is one of those rare hip-hop artists that is lyrically polished beyond his 23 years. He is a graphic storyteller, has a regionless accent and made a name for himself last August with the release of his critically praised mixtape, The Water[s]. According to a recent interview with Redbull, 2015 will (hopefully) see the release of his full-length album, The Healing Component, and an untitled EP. Either way, this is the year hip-hop fans add Mick Jenkins to their playlists and download files.
Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 8 p.m. All ages welcome. Cover is $3 with RSVP HERE or $10 at the door. Entry is first come first served up to capacity. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Arrive early. Visit the Facebook event page here.
