Thursday, Feb. 12, Austin-based music and film blog Side One Track One is presenting a live showcase at Holy Mountain featuring two of the best bands to ever come out of Houston, The Tontons and Wild Moccasins. Austin pysch-pop faves Tele Novella round out a three band lineup worthy of a weekend billing.
The Tontons are led by frontwoman Asli Omar, who delivers sultry vocals over the band’s catchy blend of indie rock, R&B and jazz. They won the Houston Press Awards for “Best New Act” in 2008 and “Best Local Recording” in 2014. Their festival appearances include Voodoo Music Fest, Lone Star Music Fest, Afropunk and of course Houston’s Free Press Summer Festival. The group is touring in support of their latest Billboard charting, self-released Make Out King and Other Stories of Love.
Wild Moccasins, another Houston act whose name is now known far beyond the Space City Limits, are signed to New West Records. They list themselves as an indie-pop band, but I hear more of a synth heavy, post-punk group that has intertwining male-female vocals. Since self-releasing their debut EP in 2009, they have garnered a large devoted following resulting in sold out shows and favorable press. Led by vocalist/keyboardist Zahira Gutierrez and vocalist/guitarist Cody Swann, the group is touring in support of sophomore release 88 92 and their new 7′ single for “Gag Reflections.”
Holy Mountain is located at 617 E.7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. Advance tickets for this event are available for purchase online here.
