Friday, Jan. 30, popular east side venue Hotel Vegas will be invaded by Austin’s own cosmic funksters, Golden Dawn Arkestra. Before their space ship lands, Austin-based soul bands ROXY ROCA and The Holy Child will have already gotten the party started. It’s a great local bill that is stacked with talented bands outside the typical garage and indie rock genres the venue is known for.
Golden Dawn Arkestra are a collective of local musicians led by saxophonist Topaz McGarrigle, aka Zapot Mgwana. As the name implies, the group is influenced by jazz musician and cosmic philosopher Sun Ra. Their music is a psychedelic fusion of sounds that include Afrobeat, funk, Latin and future sounds you haven’t heard about yet. Their live set features the band members wearing “shimmering regal robes reminiscent of intergalactic kingdoms of yore” and go-go dancers. It is truly an out of this world experience.
Hotel Vegas is located at 1500 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $8 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
