The July installment of the popular Red Bull Sound Select: Austin showcases happens tonight, July 9, at The Parish. Tonight’s Red Bull Sound Select: Austin showcase was curated by the folks at Pushermania who have brought together two of the best soul bands in Texas with one of Houston’s best rappers to open.
Rising stars Latasha Lee & The BlackTies are Austin’s answer to filling your Amy Winehouse void. They give your stubborn-ass mama a reason to listen to new music. Lee’s soulful, vintage vocal stylings go with her subtle sass and vintage vibe. Backed by her large band that includes musician/producer Salih Williams, Latasha Lee & The BlackTies are part of a new wave of younger soul bands reviving the genre to back to mainstream popularity.
Speaking of old-school soul, Houston’s The Suffers are making waves of their own. The ten piece band is fronted by singer Kam Franklin, who brings out a warm, sultry soul sound not heard too often in modern soul bands. The multiple Houston Press Music Awards winners are different from their counterparts in that their music mixes vintage soul, classic rock & roll with hints of vintage Jamaican rocksteady.
Showcase opener Fat Tony is a multiple Houston Press award winner. The Nigerian-American artist is performing in support of his second full-length album Smart Ass Black Boy, released in 2013 on Young One Records.
